Sweetwater met her husband, Nigel Ratburn, while they were both teachers at Lakewood. When their relationship began, they were forced to keep it secret, since interspecies relationships were still illegal and taboo. Sweetwater became a pioneer of inter-species rights with her involvement in the Interspecies Revolution.
Teaching career and relationship with RatburnEdit
She was employed as a third grade teacher at Lakewood Elementary in Elwood City, Pennsylvania. During this time, she was known as an excessively kind person. In Issue 055, her first appearance, Serenity exhibited her jovial personality, strumming a guitar as she drove to Chickin Lickin', where she paid for the person behind her. Since then, she has toned down her philanthropy.
Serenity's relationship with Nigel Ratburn, a colleague at Lakewood, was first revealed in Issue 069, but it likely began sometime before that. Serenity and Nigel had to keep their romance a secret, as interspecies relationships were illegal in Elwood City. When George Lundgren, one of Ratburn's students, discovered the relationship, he blackmailed Ratburn. Eventually, Serenity and Nigel decided to confess to Franics Haney (the principal of the school and their boss) that they were together. They walked in on Haney and Miss Tingely kissing passionately (another interspecies relationship), and all four decided to keep each other's secret.
